What it does in US skies
FedEx, UPS and Amazon Air operate large 767 freighter fleets that crisscross the country overnight, while Delta and United still fly the 767-300ER to Europe and South America. The US Air Force KC-46 tanker is also based on the 767.
Main US operators: FedEx, UPS, Amazon Air, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines.
How to recognize a 767-300
- Medium-size twin-aisle body that looks slimmer than a 777 or A330.
- Pointed nose and cockpit windows shared with the 757.
- Freighters have no passenger windows and a big cargo door on the left front.
- Main gear has two four-wheel bogies; wings have a noticeable upward bend.
How it looks on a flight tracker
Typically at FL330 to FL410 at 450 to 550 kt. Look for FDX, UPS and GTI or ATN (often Amazon flights) callsigns at night, and DAL or UAL on transatlantic departures in the evening.
History
The 767-300 entered service with Japan Airlines in 1986. Boeing is still building 767 freighters and KC-46 tankers more than 40 years after the original 767's 1981 first flight.
