What it does in US skies

Southwest flies hundreds of 737-700s, so it is one of the most frequently seen jets over the US. It works short and medium domestic routes, often on quick turnarounds of under an hour on the ground.

Main US operators: Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines.

    How to recognize a 737-700

    • Classic 737 nose with eyebrow-free cockpit windows and a pointed tail cone.
    • Flat-bottomed, 'hamster pouch' engine nacelles that sit close to the wing.
    • Shorter body than the 737-800 with a single pair of overwing exits.
    • Blended winglets on most US examples.

How it looks on a flight tracker

Typically cruises at FL320 to FL390 at 420 to 510 kt. SWA dominates the callsigns; military and government C-40 versions appear too.

    History

The 737-700 entered service with Southwest Airlines in 1998. The US Navy and Air Force fly a derivative called the C-40 Clipper.
