Airbus A319 A319

The Airbus A319 is a shortened member of Airbus's A320 family, seating roughly 124 to 156 passengers. It shares the cockpit, wing and systems of the A320 but has a fuselage about 3.7 m shorter. It is a workhorse for thinner domestic routes where a full-size A320 would carry empty seats.

What it does in US skies

In the US the A319 flies mid-size city pairs and hub feeder routes for American, United and Delta. It is common but less numerous than the A320 and A321, and airlines are slowly retiring older examples in favor of A220s and larger neos.

Main US operators: American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines.

    How to recognize a A319

    • Classic Airbus nose and cockpit windows with a short, stubby-looking fuselage.
    • Only one pair of overwing emergency exits (the A320 has two).
    • Small wingtip fences on most, or tall curved sharklets on later builds.
    • Noticeably shorter ahead of the wing than an A320 or A321 at the same gate.

How it looks on a flight tracker

Typically cruises between FL330 and FL370 at ground speeds of 420 to 500 kt depending on winds. Look for AAL, UAL, DAL and FFT callsigns on short and medium domestic legs.

    History

The A319 entered service with Swissair in 1996. More than 1,400 were built, and a corporate version, the ACJ319, is popular as a VIP jet.
